Port Douglas Things To See and Do – Walking Trails

Monday, June 6th, 2011

For the walkers among us there are many walking tracks up here in the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area.

A short 20 minute drive from Nimrod Resort is the Mossman Gorge, a section of the Daintree National Park.

Mossman Gorge is part of the traditional lands of the Kuku Yalanji people.

Mossman Gorge is very accessible and has some easy grade walks for the non-walker or less able.

There are two easy grade walks, one a short 400 metre river circuit that runs alongside the Mossman River, returning through the forest. The walk takes about 10 minutes. The other circuit is the Rainforest track this has a 2.7 kilometre return and takes around an hour. Plenty of signs on the walk give you information about the rainforest plants.

The park has a large variety of birdlife, is home to tree-kangaroos and forest dragons. Look out also for the beautiful brilliant blue Ulysses butterflies.

For the walkers who like something with a little more difficulty the Manjal Jimalji trail in Mossman Gorge requires an above average level of fitness. Be prepared for steep ascents and slippery surfaces. With a return of 10.6 km you need to allow 8 hours. The grade is difficult.

Manjal Jimalji is the Eastern Kuku Yalanji place name for the locally known Devils Thumb. Manjal Jimalji is a significant cultural site that tells the story of fire creation.

This more difficult trail provides a chance to see the unique vegetation of the upland and lowland rainforests. The large range of bird life found here changes with altitude. On a clear day, walkers can enjoy stunning views of the coastline from the lookout.

These are just a few of the trails available in the wet tropics.
